Once Upon a Charm: A Love-Filled Journey to Create Children’s Eyewear Girls Adore

Once upon a time, in the heart of a mother’s determination and a little girl’s dreams, Once Upon a Charm was born. It wasn’t just an idea, it was a mission. A mission to create glasses for girls that weren’t just worn, but loved and cherished.

Curious how our enchanted eyewear line and mission began?

Each section below shares a chapter of the story that brought Once Upon a Charm to life. One little girl, one determined mother, and a heartfelt desire to turn eyewear into something girls would treasure, not tolerate.

The Beginning of Our Enchanted Eyewear Journey

Our story began when we learned my daughter needed glasses at the age of four. What should have been a simple search for cute glasses for girls quickly turned frustrating.

I remember holding her hand, standing before endless rows of frames, expecting to find something delicate enough for her little face. Instead, everything was too large, too bold, too overwhelming. Though she said nothing, I could feel her disappointment, her quiet realization that glasses would mean something that wasn’t truly her.

When I first told her she needed glasses, it had felt like a non-event. But in that store, facing rows of unappealing frames, it quietly became one. Eventually, we found a pair she was content with, and she wore them contentedly for two years.

Then one afternoon, after school, she came home in tears. During a self-portrait project, another child had laughed when she drew herself with glasses.

As she bravely shared her story, I held back tears. And in that moment, my mission was ignited: to create glasses for girls that would never leave them feeling embarrassed or ashamed, but instead cherished, celebrated, and proud of who they are.

Designing Magical, Customizable Glasses for Girls

That difficult moment stayed with me. And, slowly it grew into a mission to create eyewear for girls that felt not just functional but truly enchanting. I wasn't willing to design yet another line of frames that girls would merely tolerate. I wanted to craft glasses they would genuinely treasure.

So, with my daughter by my side, I learned to see eyewear through the eyes of a little girl.

My creations are not what the grownups in the eyewear industry think she should wear.

They are not barely shrunk down versions of what is trendy for adults at any particular moment in time.

Rather, they are inspired by what she would feel proud to put on. What would make her feel joyful, magical and beautifully herself.

For inspiration, I turned to my daughter and to the everyday magic of girlhood. The daydreams, the doodles, the tiny treasures tucked into pockets and jewelry boxes. I thought about how little girls love collecting little things. Seashells, mini erasers, small rocks. They adore tiny earrings and sparkly, little rings. So why not make kids prescription glasses just as collectible and delightful?

This is how Once Upon a Charm came to life.

My Daughter: The Heart Behind the Sparkle

My daughter didn’t just inspire Once Upon a Charm. She helped me build it, one magical idea at a time.

From helping me dream up the tiny stories behind each charm to thoughtfully suggesting we add little arrows on the charm backs (so girls wouldn’t accidentally put them in upside down), to her QC'ing the very page you're reading right now, her sweet fingerprints are tucked into every corner of this brand.

She has brought whimsy and wisdom in equal measure and reminds me that enchantment and practicality can live side by side.

I'll never forget the day my first sample frames arrived for me to approve. We were in the car, headed to the optometrist to have her prescription filled. She cradled the frames in her lap, turning them over and over in her hands like they were a treasure.

I watched her in the rear-view mirror, worried that she might not like them. After a long, quiet moment, she looked at me in the mirror and said:

"Now I know why you write so many emails. You did all this for me. I'm proud of you, Mama."

And she was right. I did do it for her.

But I also did it for your daughter.

For daughters everywhere who deserve to love their glasses, not feel ashamed or embarrassed.

Our “I Can!” Charm: A Symbol of Belief

Starting an eyewear brand for kids wasn’t easy, it was overwhelming difficult at times. Some days, the road felt impossibly too steep, with more dark doubt than daylight.

But through every moment of doubt, my daughter reminded me: You can.

On one particularly hard day after I picked her up from Kindergarten, she handed me a small clay heart she had made at her little art table. Pressed into the center were two simple words: You Can.

That tiny gift still sits on my desk today. It is my daily reminder of her belief in me, and of the quiet, unshakable love that can move mountains.

That clay heart also became the inspiration behind our “I Can!” charm. A symbol of courage, encouragement, and the quiet strength girls carry inside them.

At Once Upon a Charm, we believe every girl should know that she can.

Because when she believes that she can, she will

The Little Hands That Helped Build a Big Dream

This brand initially began with my determination to create glasses my daughter would actually love to wear. But somewhere along the way, it became something more.

I’ve found quiet magic in the little things she has scribbled down and her sweet thoughts left like treasures on the kitchen counter (like this one!). She has left me handmade cards wishing me luck on my desk and tucked tiny notes cheering me on around our home.

As the months went by, this dream stopped feeling like mine alone. It became a shared journey, built from her laughter, her drawings, and her endless belief in me.

Now, every frame and charm I design carries a little of her spirit and a reminder of what can grow when love and purpose meet.

My Mission to Give Back

Once Upon a Charm is more than a brand, it’s my way of giving back.

We were incredibly fortunate. My daughter’s vision issues were caught early, before she ever stepped foot into a classroom. She completed vision therapy just in time for kindergarten. And today, she sees the world with clarity and confidence.

But I know not every child is that lucky.

According to the American Optometric Association, 1 in 4 children has an undiagnosed vision problem. And too often, these hidden challenges are mistaken for something else, like ADHD, anxiety, or a learning delay. These silent (yet treatable) conditions quietly affect reading, writing, confidence, and joy.

And, sadly, they are easy to go unseen. Even by the most dedicated parents.

They go unseen because children don't think to share what they're seeing (or not seeing). Because it is quite simply all they know. They assume that how they see is how you see.

That’s why Once Upon a Charm is not just about charming glasses, it’s about lighting the path for others.

I’ve poured my heart into creating articles, guides, and gentle resources to help parents understand what to look for and where to turn. Because the earlier we catch these issues, the brighter a child’s future can be.

In addition to designing beautiful glasses for girls, this brand is also a token of my gratitude, and my commitment to help other parents walk a path we were fortunate to find early.
